Glorified Careers: The Modern Youth’s Path

The Illusion of Glorified Careers:

How many of us, especially the youth, are chasing careers not because of genuine passion, but for status? In today’s world – and especially in Indian society – status has become one of the most important factors in choosing a career. Many don’t even realize that this chase for social glory can be the biggest mistakes of their lives.

We often ignore key elements like our passion, interest, personality, and behaviour. Instead, we focus on three: status, money, and security. In this chase, youth fall into the trap of glorified careers – choosing a path only because it “looks good” on the outside.

Have you ever watched those well-edited career reels on social media? The ones with dramatic background music, slow motion walking shots, uniforms, confidence, and swag? Or the movies and TV shows that present careers like defence, civil services, business, engineering, and medicine as the ultimate dream?

These visuals give us a temporary “main character” moment, where we imagine ourselves in that powerful role – and it feels good. But here lies the danger. Choosing a career based solely on its gloried image can become a lifelong burden. Trying to show careers glory isn’t wrong but choosing career by seeing their glory is wrong.

When Dreams Meet Reality:

A few years ago, when I was just 12 or 13, I started wondering about my future career. I thought: why not fulfil my childhood dream of becoming a pilot and astronaut? It felt unique, exciting, and full of pride.

But soon I realized that becoming a commercial pilot was extremely expensive. So, I planned to join the Indian Air Force instead. After gaining years of flying experience there, I could pursue  becoming an astronaut. Sounds like a smart plan, right?

So I began working towards that goal. I learned about the defence entrance process, watched movies and reels about Air force officers, and felt deeply inspired. I even cleared entrance exams and interviews for training academies. But then, reality hit.

I faced unexpected resistance – both physical challenges like myopia and emotional ones. It felt like the universe was trying to stop me. I questioned it, got frustrated because I was deeply inspired to work in Air Force by seeing the glory and respect which I will get after being an Officer, but then i finally did something important: I self reflected.

The Power Of Self Reflection:

I asked myself honestly: “Am I truly passionate towards joining Indian Air Force or it’s just the outcome of the glory which I saw and heard?

And my inner voice said: No.

That “no” wasn’t casual – after days of deep thought. I realized:

  • I had no interest in Math and Physics, which are key subjects in aviation.
  • I’m a person who values freedom, creativity, and self- expression.
  • But defence life is about discipline, rules, and obedience.

I wasn’t made for that life. And though I still deeply respect the defence forces, I accepted that it wasn’t my path.

Choosing A Path That Truly Fits You:

Here’s what I learned: Don’t choose a career just because it’s glamorous. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Does this career align with who I truly am?
  • Can I live a fulfilling life in this role, even during the toughest times?
  • Am I willing to face the struggles, obstacles, and sacrifices required to succeed in this field?

The idea is not just to choose a career that looks good but to choose one that fits you – your true self. Look beyond the surface and find the balance between passion and financial stability. Glory fades, but the daily reality of your career doesn’t.

In the end, don’t choose a career for the glory it shows the world. Choose it for the fulfilment it gives you. The path to success isn’t about fame or applause – it’s about finding peace in the work you do every day. So, ask yourself: Will this journey bring me true happiness? Because true success lies in following a path that aligns with your heart, not just your status.

Choose a career that not only looks good, but one that makes you feel alive. Success isn’t about what the world sees – it’s about how you feel when you wake up to your purpose every day.
